| The examination of the Harbor Grace Grammar School took
place on Wednesday last in the presence of the Directors and a number of
friends. Of the branches taught (including Latin, French, Natural
Philosophy, Practical Mathematics, General, British and Newfoundland
History and Geography, Book-keeping, etc.), only a part could of course,
owing to want of time, be made the subjects of examination, but enough, I
think was heard to warrant the belief that the aim of the Institution is
to give its pupils a good solid instruction in those studies calculated to
be of use to them in after life, and at the same time fitted to develop
their mental faculties. There was evidently no attempt at "cramming" and
no encouragement to the parrot-like memorizing of the words of a
text-book, which is often mistaken for the acquisition of knowledge. The
proceedings terminated with some remarks by the Directors and the
distribution of prizes.
