The Annual Examination of the Harbor Grace Grammar School
took place on Thursday last in the presence of the Board of Directors and
other friends of this institution. We were particularly pleased to notice
among the visitors the presence of so many clergymen belonging to the
different denominations represented in the school.
The exercises of the day, commencing at half-past 10 a.m., were continued, without intermission, until about 1:30 p.m. and during that time the different classes were subjected to a very searching examination on the various branches which had formed the subject of their study during the past year; and the manner in which they acquitted themselves was such as reflected great credit both upon teacher and taught. This School has been always distinguished more for thoroughness than for show; and its reputation in this respect seems to be well sustained by its present Principal. In their replies to the various questions asked, the pupils, as a whole, not only manifested great expertness but showed also that they understood whereof they spoke, and their acquaintance with "the Chemistry of Common Things" was the subject of special remark and commendation among the audience. At the close of the exercises prizes were distributed to the successful candidates in the different classes by the Chairman of the Board, W.P. Munn, Esq., who took occasion to speak some kind words of encouragement to the Teacher and children. Short addresses were also made by the clergymen and others present. There seems to us to be quite a revival of late in the cause of education in our midst, as evidenced by the various improvements made in the furniture and other equipments of the different School Rooms, as well as in the marked increase of visitors at the annual examinations, and in the deepened interest manifested by the people generally upon those occasions List of prizes: LATIN - First Class Edmund WILLIAMS * LATIN - Second Class 1 - Ernest GODDEN GENERAL PROFICIENCY - First Class 1 - Ernest GODDEN * GENERAL PROFICIENCY - Second Class 1 - Joseph ROSS * GENERAL PROFICIENCY - Third Class 1 - Wm EMERSON * PENMANSHIP 1- A.
