In the name of God----Amen.
This is the last Will and Testament of me, Edward Patten of Grand Bank, in the Southern District of Newfoundland – Planter. I give, devise and bequeath to my two sons, Samuel and John Patten, jointly, my fishing stage, situated in Grand Bank, near the Bridge. I give and bequeath to my Wife, Sarah Anne Patten all that my freehold house, messuage or tenement – in which I now reside, with the ground, outbuildings and appurtenances thereunto – belonging situate at Grand Bank aforesaid – and I also give and bequeath to my said wife, Sarah Anne all my house hold furniture, goods and effects of every description for her own use, absolutely. It is my will and desire that my Schooner the “ Mary Margaret”, of about 36 tons, shall be sold after my death, and the proceeds applied to the payment of such debts as I justly owe, after which the balance remaining I give and bequeath to my wife, Sarah Anne aforesaid for her own use absolutely. I will and bequeath to my two sons, Samuel and John Patten, aforesaid, jointly, all my Gets, fishing gear and tackle of any kind, but I particularly desire that my Herring-Seino may be reserved and sold after my death – at once – and the proceeds there of I give and bequeath to my Wife, Sarah Anne aforesaid. And I herby appoint my said Wife sole Executria of this my Will and Testement. In witness, where of, I hereunto set my hand this ninth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight-hundred and seventy three, at Grand Bank aforesaid.
