NL GenWebBonavista Bay ~ Bonavista North DistrictNewtown - Barbour Family CemeteryHere is the database for the Barbour family cemetery at Newtown, Bonavista Bay. Newtown is one of the older fishing villages in Bonavista Bay North. It is famous for the Barbour family who were fish merchants and sea captains in that area. The Barbour Heritage Home is a restoration of the Barbour homes and fishing property, reflecting their lifestyle in the first half of the twentieth century. The Barbour Heritage Home is quickly becoming a major tourist attraction. Within walking distance of this home is t he Barbour family cemetery. It is immediately adjacent to the main road in the community and overlooks the narrow, rocky habour. This small cemetery provides a welcomed glimpse into the past, and reflects the proud heritage of this family. This cemetery was actually the Methodist cemetery once upon a time and only became the BARBOUR family cemetery after a newer Methodist/United cemetery was created. You will note that some of the earlier stones (which if you were to physically walk into the cemetery are largely located in the right-hand corner closest to the gate) are of individuals who were buried there as Methodist members and not as BARBOURS. The inscriptions were read, recorded and transcribed by FRANK & HEATHER KING, 1999. While we have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be typographical errors. |
