NL GenWebBonavista Bay Region ~ Bonavista Central DistrictSouth Gooseberry Island CemeteriesSeveral burying sites exist on South Gooseberry Island. Initially they were identified as Anglican, Methodist and Salvation Army Cemeteries, but have since reverted to commons, after the Island was vacated in 1947-1948. Scores of people are buried on South Gooseberry Island, and their grave sites are now overgrown with grass or bushes, with no fences or headstones to mark their actual location. I have listed the headstones from four or five different sites, beginning at "Burnt Point", on the north-eastern end of the Island, and moving towards the south-western end of the South Gooseberry Island. At "Burnt Point", the three headstones of the "Sweetapple" family are resting flat on rocky, barren ground. The exposed graves have been eroded with fire , wind, rain, frost and snow. "House" and "Howse" are variant spellings for the same family name. e.g. James "Howse", is the youngest son of John "House" . The Anglican Church Register of Baptisms, records James and Anne House, children of John House, both baptised on June 9, 1815.The inscriptions were read, recorded and transcribed by DOMINO HOWSE, 1970s-1990s. While I have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be typographical errors. |
