Century Bonavista Bay Folk

It is more often difficult to prove connections of 17th Century Censused Newfoundland folk, to their mother Country, ancestral hometowns. (Consider that some individuals as listed, were second or third generation Planters in Newfoundland.) The intent of this very brief document, is not to prove any connections which may appear below. Rather merely to present the record details, which indicate connections, based on their “own” merit. Will this very brief listing below here, assist future searchings?

The Nov 30, 1715, Will of John Slade, alias Slate, Poole, Dorset, Mason. Gives his son William Slade, the land in Market Street, purchased from Ralph Travers.

Extract of the Will of William Warren of Purewell, Christchurch, Hampshire. His Will made on January 20, 1700, & probated on Feb 18, 1700. Names an only daughter Margaret, the wife of John Pitt. His Will witnessed by John Pitt, Henry King, & James Stevens. *John Pitt wed Margaret Warren on Oct 14, 1697, at Christchurch Parish.

Jan 10, 1739, Admin of Joseph Pitt, late of Newfoundland, & of Shirley in Christchurch Parish, Hampshire. Grantee: John Pitt of Shirley, Yeoman, brother of the deceased. [ Shirley, East of Ripley. North of Bransgore. ] [ Bransgore, a chapelry in Christchurch Parish. ] [ Avon, Ripley, and Shirley, are tithings, in the Parish of Sopley. ]

Thomas Bishop wed Charity Jollife on Nov 18, 1674, at Boldre. Thomas Bishop, son of Thomas Bishop, bap on July 13, 1682, at Milton, Hampshire. Charity Bishop buried on Dec 8, 1713, at Milton, Hampshire.

Thomas[Mariner] & Elizabeth Bishop (marriage not found) had children baptised at Milton, Hampshire: Elizabeth - Nov 10, 1714. Wed Simon Adey of Sopley, on Jan 1, 1733, at Milton, Hampshire. Thomas[Mariner] - Aug 31, 1716. March 1, 1737, renounced administration of his father's estate, as the "Only son". William - Oct 26, 1721. ?Buried Aug 28, 1722? John - Oct 26, 1721. ?Buried April 12, 1733? Elizabeth Bishop, wife of Thomas, buried on Nov 21, 1729, at Milton, Hampshire. Thomas Bishop buried on Mar 23, 1732/3, at Milton, Hampshire. ??Mariner??

Thomas & Winnifred Bishop, ( marriage not found) had children baptised: Thomas - ?? - buried on Sep 17, 1742, at Milton, Hampshire. Winnifred - bap on June 26, 1746, at Sopley. Parents of Milton Parish. Buried on Nov 25, 1804, at Sopley. Thomas Bishop, born 1716, deceased at Fogo Island, Newfoundland; pre March, 1753. Winnifred Bishop buried on June 12, 1781, at Sopley.

March 9, 1737, Will of John Brent of Upper Kingston, Ringwood, Newfoundland Planter. Names his wife Elizabeth Brent, & his daughter Elizabeth Brent. Elizabeth King witnessed his Will. John Brent's signature, displays "very nice cursive writing". Of considerable social standing? Elizabeth Brent, Widow, sworn on Dec. 16, 1738, for Admon. Per his 1738 Inventory; his proceeds of Newfoundland produce on the vessel "Charming Molly", [William Kitcher/Kittier]. In effect, it appears William Kitcher had received the season's produce of John Brent, of Vere Island.

*The Inventory of Estate, for John Brent, Planter; commenced on Nov 29, 1738, includes: Feb 1, 1738. By 5 Tons, 3 Hogsheads, & 4 Gallons Cod Oil, sold at 12-8-0 per Ton = 73-2-10. March 4, 1739. By the Real Proceeds of fish by the "Charming Molly" = 143-8-8. Aug 1, 1739. By 3-2-7 Seal Oil at 15-10-0 per Ton = 54-12-7. Feb 20, 1740. By 81 Quintals of fish per John Blake, at 3-2 & 1/2 per Quintal = 9-15-8 & 1/2. By 20 Pounds of feathers = 1-0-0. Total Estate value = 349-14-2 & 1/2. (Possibly a 2nd generation Planter. A successful adventure. *Pounds, Shillings, Pence.)

PCC Will of William Kitcher, Mariner of Poole, Dorset. Probated at London, Oct 6, 1747. PROB 11/757/106.

"Cleared Outwards of" Portsmouth, Hampshire; & Poole, Dorset. *William & John Kitcher of Hythe, Fawley, were sons of William & Mary Kitcher of Hythe. A Maltster family. The son William, became a Mariner. William & John Kitcher of Hythe, were Cousins to Moses & William Kittier of Ringwood; sons of Moses Kittier. Moses Kittier and his sons, of Ringwood; appear to have had a big stake in the Bonavista, and Notre Dame Bay, early fisheries. William Kitcher[Kittear], the Mariner, did business at Trinity Bay and Bonavista Bay. ?Notre Dame Bay? *1753 Census, Trinity Bay Northside. William Pike. William Pike lineage at Poole, was long associated with Trinity Bay. Thomas Pike lineage at Poole, was long associated with Carbonear, Conception Bay.

His Feb 2, 1686, Inventory of Estate includes: Part of 2 vessels of fish = 12 Shillings. 3 new Gun stocks & locks = 12 Shillings. 1 bill due from John Cox = 2 Pounds. 1 bill due from William King = 2 Pounds. 1 debt due from William King = 1 Pounds, & 12 Shillings. 1 debt due from Philip Pitt = 1 Pounds, & 15 Shillings. 1 debt due from Peter Crew = 10 Shillings. 2 Seal skins = 8 Shillings. In Ready money = 15 Pounds. Goods & money at Newfoundland = 20 Pounds, 13 Shillings, & 4 Pence.

*John Petten of Swanage, Dorset, died in Newfoundland in 1684. His Estate value of 41 Pounds & 7 Shillings. *1675 Census, Silly Cove. John Petten. (Silly Cove - the Cilly/Silly/Sully/Sealey/Sooley, etc. family, of Poole, Dorset.)

*Nov 2, 1723, Will of George Christophers of Palmers, Christchurch, Hampshire, and Hants Harbour, Trinity Bay. Names his wife Barbara. Gives his son George Christophers his Plantation in Hants Harbour. Confirms unto his son George, his Customary Claims, to his Copyhold estate at Palmers, Christchurch. Probated on March 10, 1724, by the Oath of his wife, Barbara Christophers. *1708 Census, Hants Harbour. George Christopher.

*March 25, 1744, Will of James Croucher of Riply, Sopley, Hampshire, Newfoundland Planter, at Old Perlican. Names his wife Patience Croucher, and his Son, James Croucher. John Burt, Sarah Morris Senior & Sarah Morris Junior, witnessed his Will. (Consider Moors/Moores.) On March 4, 1746, Patience Croucher was sworn at Hampshire, for Admon of estate, lying at Ripley, & Old Perlican. *1753 Census, English Harbour, Trinity Bay. John Crowcher. ( There are numerous examples of forenames James/John, John/Joseph, & John/Jack, exchanged in historical documents.)

*March 20, 1757, Will of Thomas Witherington, of Christchurch, Hampshire, Newfoundland Planter. Mentions his effects at St. Peters, in Newfoundland. And on board of the ship "Rugged and Tuff" of Poole, now bound out to Newfoundland, Shadrach Linthorne, Master. Names his friend of William Fennel of St. Peters, Newfoundland. (Island of St. Pierre. ) Names his sister Mary Witherington of Holwell in the parish of Cranbourne, Dorset. Names his brother Simon Witherington. *April 4, 1748, Will of William Finnell of Christchurch, Newfoundland Planter.
