Will of William McDonald

In re WILLIAM McDONALD. DECEASED.

In the name of God Amen. The fourteenth day of September one thousand eight hundred and fifty five. I, William McDonald of the town of St. John's in the Island of Newfoundland being of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament and give and bequeath my property in the following manner, viz. three houses divided into six tenements in Buchanan Street in the town and island aforesaid, viz to Catherine Whittle my step-daughter I give & bequeath the upstairs tenement of the upper house with furniture appertaining thereto to my step-daughter's eldest son William Whittle I give and bequeath the centre house containing two tenements also my silver watch and my chest with contents, bedstead, bed & bedding to my step-daughter's sons Peter and Michael Whittle I give and bequeath the lower house containing two tenements to my step-daughter's children Richard & Mary Ann Whittle I give & bequeath the lower tenement of the upper house. Provided nevertheless that all my lawful debts are liquidated my remains receive decent Christian burial and a tombstone erected, and further that the sum of two pounds currency be paid annually to the Right Revd Doctor Mullock or the Roman Catholic Bishop for the time being for Masses for the repose of my soul and further that the aforesaid property is never to be sold or mortgaged & further that all rents profits and emoluments arising out of the said property hereby bequeathed to my stepdaughter's children William, Peter, Michael, Richard and Mary Ann Whittle until they become of legal age shall be deposited in some fund or Bank paying interest thereon that the amount or amounts so deposited may increase for their benefit and it is further provided that each house or tenements shall bear its due and fair proportion of the ground rent annually paid on the aforesaid premises.     And I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other power, testaments, wills, legacies and bequests by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.

In witness hereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

Signed sealed and pronounced by the said William McDonald as his last will and testament in the presence of us the subscribers being first read over and explained to the testator,
