My research leads me to believe that Thomas Martin was once a servant of John Jones who died as a preacher for the Society of the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG). A tribute to Jones may be in the name of his son Thomas Jones Martin who married Anne Murren.
At this stage the father of William Martin is uncertain but may have been John Martin.
William Martin was first married in December 1841 to Mary Anne Russell. They had one son Edward. In December 1873 at Harbour Grace Edward married Sarah Jane Cook, a daughter of Thomas Rex Cook and Rebecca Earle. Thomas was a son of George and Elizabeth Cook.
Mary Anne Russell died in 1847 and William then married in June 1848, Caroline Cook, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Cook. William and Caroline had 10 children.
William Martin was a grandson of Thomas and Mary Martin of the White Hills. Thomas died in 1845 and his will is posted at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cannf/as_wills_thomasmartin1845.htm

Knight Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland or to one of the Honorable the Assistant Judges thereof The Petition of Caroline Martin of St. John’s Widow Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioners Husband William Martin late of White Hills in the Eastern District of St. John’s Farmer died at that place on or about the ninth day of October last past That said William Martin deceased left him surviving Your Petitioner his Widow and Seven Children all of whom are of age. That at the time of his decease the said William Martin was possessed of property and effects within the Jurisdiction of this Honorable Court of the probable value of Three thousand Six Hundred Dollars. That said deceased left no will That no Probate or Letters of administration have as yet been granted to said Estate.
