Will of Thomas Whitfield Atkinson

IN RE:   THOMAS W. ATKINSON.    DECEASED

This is the last Will and Testament of me, Thomas Whitfield Atkinson, Methodist Minister, at present residing at Saint John's, Newfoundland, made this thirty first day of December, One thousand nine hundred and twenty one: I give to my eldest son Hubert Smith Atkinson one Time piece presented me by the people of Twillingate; and he may have, should he wish, upon his payment the price for them paid by me, namely thirty five dollars, one the organ and rocking chair I bought of Mrs Snowden,

I leave in the care of my said son Hubert Smith Atkinson the two cases of books that are in the front room of my present residence at "119" Quidi Vidi Road, said books to be kept by him in his house at Bay Roberts for the benefit of my two remaining sons Willie Watson Hunt Atkinson and Albert Edward Atkinson, both now resident in Canada, and to be theirs alone should they ever return to Newfoundland, when they, my said two sons Willie Watson Hunt Atkinson and Albert Edward Atkinson, may decide what they will do, each with his own part, give keep or sell them according to choice.

I also leave in the keeping of my said son Hubert Smith Atkinson, in his house aforesaid, one bed and bedstead with all the bed-clothes for the use of my said sons Willie Watson Hunt Atkinson and Albert Edward Atkinson or any of my relations who may go to see or visit my said son Hubert Smith Atkinson.

I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Mona I. Smith the sum of Five hundred dollars, to be paid in cash by my executors on her twentieth birthday or as soon thereafter as they conveniently may; but should she die before reaching that age then I direct that such said sum of Five hundred dollars shall be divided and paid in equal proportions to my said three sons Hubert Smith Atkinson, Willie Watson Hunt Atkinson and Albert Edward Atkinson; and I also direct that any money over and above the preceding Five hundred dollars remaining in my possession at my decease shall likewise be divided between my said three sons; And also that all goods belonging to me at my decease be sold, and that my debts and funeral and testamentary expenses being paid thereout the balance of the proceeds shall also be equally divided between my said sons - Provided that the benefit bequest to my granddaughter hereinbefore contained be first made sure.

I appoint my brother-in-law Rev. William Henry Dotchon and my said, eldest, son Hubert Smith Atkinson Executors of this my will, hereby giving them all the requisite authority to get in and receive any amounts of money due me from any source whatever, to sign receipts, or to do as far forth as my properties will allow whatever is necessary, that they may fulfil the conditions herein contained - for which services they shall receive no remuneration. And lastly I revoke all my former wills. In Witness Whereof I have signed my name at the foot or end of this my will as and for my last Will and Testament in the sight and presence of the two subscribing witnesses, the day and year having been first hereinbefore written.

We the undersigned have attested the execution of the foregoing writing by the said Thomas Whitfield Atkinson, of "119" Quidi Vidi Road, Saint John's, he signing his name thereto in our sight and presence, present at the same time, and without quitting his or each other's sight or presence we subscribe the same as witnesses.
