Will of Samuel Serle

IN RE:   SAMUEL SERLE    DECEASED

In the Name of God amen I Samuel Serle of Long Pond in the District of Harbor Main Newfoundland, Farmer being very sick in Body but of perfect mind and memory and knowing that it is appointed for all once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament

First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Patience my dwelling house goods and chattles cellar horse sheep, dray, cart garden implements plough and all loose gear about the place for her own use and benefit I give also to my wife my cultivated land from my cellar to the well right square across to the back of rocks in a north east direction

I give and bequeath to my son Nathaniel my cultivated land from the well to the pond and after the death of my wife my son Nathaniel is to take possession of all that I have given and bequeathed to his mother

My wife Patience is to get her support off the land during the term of her natural life and there is to be no division of my property until after the death of my wife -

I give and bequeath to my son William Henry and my grandson William Gordon son of my late son James John who died at Sydney Cape Briton to be equally divided between them my cultivated land from my cellar east to James Ridouts - my grandson William Gordon is to take possession of his part when he is twenty one years old - If the said William Gordon should die before he is Twenty-one years old his part is to be equally divided between my sons William Henry and Nathaniel My land is never to be sold or mortgaged -

I give and bequeath to my grandson William Gordon five acres of uncultivated land that is situated in the woods south of the main road in Long Pond which he is to take possession of when he is able to clear it in ten or twelve years time -

After the death of my wife my son Nathaniel is to take possession of my dwelling house cellar goods and chattels horse sheep and all loose gear about the place plough and garden implements The stable is owned by my son Nathaniel
My outside property or the land I am living on is bound on the north by James Kennedy, south by the schoolroom road, east by James Ridout and west by the pond -

My land in the country containing about sixteen acres which land I give to my three sons some years ago having paid for the measurement of it myself - And I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former Testaments, wills and Bequests by me in anywise before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and eleven Samuel his x mark Serle (LS) Signed sealed published pronounced and declared by the said Samuel Serle (having been first read over) as his last will and Testament in the presence of us, who in his presence, and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
