Will of Richard Purcell

In re: RICHARD PURCELL . DECEASED.

This is the last will and testament of me Richard Purcell of St. John’s. I revoke all former wills by me at any time made and I appoint the Reverend James Greene, Roman Catholic priest of the Cathedral Parish, to be the executor of this my will. I direct that my just debts and my funeral and testamentary expenses shall be first paid out of my estate.

I give and bequeath to my son Michael my two houses in Walsh’s Square at present occupied by Brookings, Baker and Penny, and my two houses on Signal Hill Road occupied by Murphy and Malone. I also give and bequeath to my said son the sum of one hundred dollars, and all my clothing except one suit which is to be given away. I give and bequeath to my wife Mary the house on Signal Hill Road at present occupied by Hollihan. I also give and bequeath to my said wife the sum of Two thousand dollars. I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Ann Haligan the house on Prospect Street in which I at present reside. I also give and bequeath to my said daughter the sum of one hundred dollars, and what furniture in my said house on Prospect Street was in my possession at the time of her mother’s death.

I give and bequeath to my executor the sum of one hundred dollars to be expended by him in charity at his discretion. I give and bequeath to my said executor the sum of Fifty dollars for Masses for the repose of my soul, and of the soul of my deceased wife. All rest and residue of my Estate I give and bequeath to my said son Michael and my said daughter Mary Anne Haligan share and share alike.

In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand at St. John’s aforesaid this third day of March A.D. 1915. Richard his X mark Purcell Signed published and declared by the testator as and for his last will and testament in presence of us, both being present at the same time who at his request and in his presence have hereunto subscribed ourselves as witnesses attesting the due execution hereof, the same having been first read over and explained to the testator who appeared perfectly to understand the same and who signed the same by making his mark thereto in our presence, W.J. Higgins Jno Ryan.
