Will of Patrick L. Power

In re PATRICK L. POWER. DECEASED.

In the name of God Amen. I Patrick L. Power of St. John’s Shopkeeper being weak of body but of sound mind do make the following as my last will and testament.

1. I will and desire that my executors shall out of my monies and effects pay all lawful debts due by me.

2. I give and bequeath to the Rt. Rev. Dr. Mullock Bishop of St. John’s the sum of twenty pounds currency for High masses for my soul.

3. I give and bequeath to the Rev. Kyran Walsh of St. Johns Five pounds currency-

4. I give and bequeath to the Rev. Jeremiah O’Donnell of St. John’s the sum of five pounds cuy.

5. I give and bequeath to the Rev. M. Verricar of St. John’s Five pounds cury.

6. I give devise and bequeath unto my wife Catherine Power for her sole and exclusive use and benefit (and free of the control of any husband she may marry) the house land and premises now in my occupation between Water and Duckworth Streets in St. John’s to the full extent of my estate of leasehold or otherwise therein- and also all the stock in trade belonging to me in said house and premises and my household furniture therein at my decease Also I give and bequeath to my said wife Catherine (free of such control as aforesaid) the sum of three hundred pounds currency.

7. I also give and bequeath to my daughter Ellen Power (free of the control of any husband she may marry) the house, land and premises now occupied by Mr. Armstrong to the full extent of my leasehold or other interest or estate therein, which house and premises are situated between Water and Duckworth Streets- and on the west side of Becks Cove and I also give and bequeath to my said daughter Ellen Power the sum of Five hundred (£500) pounds currency and the piano- and all her apparel in my present dwelling house for her own exclusive use and benefit and free of the control of any husband she may marry.

8. I also give and bequeath to my daughter Bridget, wife of Mr. James Fox in Canada the sum of two hundred pounds currency for her exclusive use and benefit free of the control of her present or any future husband she may have.

9. I also give and bequeath to my daughter Anastatia wife of Mr. Kennedy in the United States, the sum of three hundred pounds currency free of the control of her present or any future husband she may have.

10. I give devise and bequeath the rest residue and remainder of my property goods chattels monies and effects of every kind soever (not hereinbefore disposed of or bequeathed) unto the Rt. Rev. Dr. Mullock in trust for the benefit of the orphanage under the charge or care of the Sisters of Mercy in St. John’s And I do hereby appoint the Reverend Jeremiah O’Donnell and Mr. William Power of St. John’s Shopkeeper executors of this my last will and testament.

In witness whereof I the said Patrick L. Power have hereunto set my hand and seal at St. John’s Newfoundland this thirtieth day of March 1857.
