Will of Matthew Slade

Last Will and Testament of Matthew Slade
late of Chamberlains Conception Bay Farmer

In the name of God Amen. I Matthew Slade of Chamberlains Conception Bay Farmer being very sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hand of Almighty God that gave it and my body I commend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial according to the rites of the Church of England nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God.
And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

First I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Sarah Slade my dwelling house stable and all household furniture debts and moveable effects also my cow. I also leave to my wife all my granted land for her support during her life with the exception that my sons James Slade and Edward Slade shall still hold and occupy the gardens on which their houses are built and at their mothers decease they shall each receive a part of the land then in possession of their mother when her funeral expences headstone and all other debts dues and demands are paid.

And lastly it is my will that should my two daughters Elizabeth and Ina desire and need it they shall have a part of my land after the death of their mother
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Fourth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty four. - Matthew his x mark Slade - Signed published pronounced and declared by the said testator Matthew Slade as his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. - William Swausborrow - George his x mark ????
