Will of John Ryan

In re: JOHN RYAN DECEASED

In the name of the Father and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. I John Ryan Priest at St. Patricks church St. John’s N.F.L. do make this my last will, and testament, hereby revoking any and all former wills by me hereto fore made. I appoint the Rev Roger Tierney, P.P. Petty Harbor as Executor to this my last will. After the payment of all my just debts and funeral expenses I give devise and bequeath the remainder of my estate: as follows:

(1) The Masses found entered in my Intention Book to be celebrated as soon as possible after my death. My Intention Book will be found in the drawer of my writing desk.

(2) one hundred and fifty dollars to be given for the celebration of Masses for those persons for whom I may have forgotten or neglected to say Masses either of obligation or promise.

(3) I wish the sum of one hundred dollars be given to the St. Vincent de Paul Societies for the poor of St. John’s

(4) To the sisters of Mercy Belvedere Convent the sum of sixty dollars

(5) The residue of my estate to be distributed among the priests for (low) masses for the repose of my soul. I hereby request my Executor to send on immediately Consensu Episcopi to Mount Mellerey. Ireland. One hundred dollars for said purpose

(6) My English Books I leave to the children of Mary. St. Patricks, to be the nucleus of a library to be kept in the Convent schools for their use. My Encyclopedia Britannica to the Christian Brothers, Holy Cross schools, to be kept in there for the use of the pupils: my theological works to those priests who will say Masses for the souls in Purgatory, and my sermon books to my Executor.

(7) My vestments, including albs. stoles, nochets and surplus to be kept and used in St. Patrick’s Church

(8) The furniture at present in my rooms, and the silverware & in the dining room I wish to be left to the priests who will succeed me at St. Patrick’s.

(9) I would wish my Executor to forward to my brother my watch and chain. The chain to be found in writing desk

(10) I request that all manuscripts (sermons or lectures) found in my rooms be at once destroyed

(11) Finally I ask pardon and forgiveness of all those I may have during life in any way offended or injured and implore their prayers and the prayers of all for the eternal repose of my poor soul.
