Will of John Curran

In re JOHN CURRAN: DECEASED.

In the name of God Amen, I John Curran of Saint John’s in the Island of Newfoundland Farmer, being of perfect sound mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say first and principally of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and the interment of my body I leave to the discretion of my executors, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life, all my lawful debts being paid, I give and bequeath and dispose of the same in the following manner and form,

I give and bequeath to my beloved wife the sum of thirty five pounds per annum during her lifetime, also one bedstead, one feather bed and bedding-

To William M. Blake in trust for my beloved son James Curran the fee simple farm I now occupy with all erections thereon also one horse and all farming utensils, beds and bedding, furniture, that I may be possessed of at the time of my death except the bequests mentioned above to my beloved wife-

To my grandson John Curran the sum of ten pounds,

To my beloved daughter Joanna Power the sum of one hundred pounds,

To my beloved daughter Margaret Brennan the sum of fifty pounds,

To my beloved sister Joanna Fahey the sum of twenty five pounds,

For to pay the funeral expenses of my beloved brother Michal Curran the sum of twenty five pounds,

For my own funeral expenses the sum of fifty pounds,

For my wife’s funeral expenses the sum of twenty pounds,

For two high Masses for the repose of my own and my wife’s soul the sum of twenty pounds,

To the Rt Rev. Dr. Power for Masses for the repose of my beloved father and mother’s soul the sum of five pounds,

Towards the erection of Saint Patrick’s Church, Riverhead, the sum of ten pounds,

To Saint Michal’s orphanage the sum of ten pounds,

To the Rev. J. O’Donnel the sum of five pounds,

To the Rev. Thomas O’Connor the sum of five pounds,

To the Very Rev. dean Cleary the sum of five pounds,

To the Clergy of the Friary of New Ross, County Wexford, the sum of five pounds stg.

If any residue of my estate remains after the above bequests are paid I leave it to the Rt. Rev. Dr. Power in trust for charitable purposes, and I hereby nominate and appoint William M. Blake and Patrick Daley, executors to this my last will and testament. It is further to be fully understood that the said William M. Blake his executors administrators or assigns shall retain the above mentioned fee simple farm for the sole use of my said son James during the said James’ lifetime, so that at his death he may bequeath it to his wife or to whomsoever of said James’ children he shall deem most deserving. In testimony whereof I set my hand and seal this first day of July one thousand eight hundred and seventy one.
