Will of James Boggan
In re JAMES BOGGAN. DECEASED.

This is the last Will and Testament of me, James Boggan of St. John’s in the Island of Newfoundland, Cooper, made this Twenty Sixth day of May, A. D. 1921.

I hereby revoke all former wills and testamentary dispositions by me at any time heretofore made.

I hereby appoint my nephew, Richard Boggan, of St. John’s aforesaid, Cooper, to be Executor of this my Will.

I direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses be paid as soon after my decease as may be convenient.

1. I give devise and bequeath to Belvedere Orphanage, St. John’s, the sum of Fifteen hundred dollars.

2. I give, devise and bequeath to the convent of Mercy, Military Road, St. John’s, the sum of One thousand dollars.

3. I give devise and bequeath to St. Patrick’s convent Riverhead, St. John’s, the sum of Five hundred dollars.

4. I give, devise and bequeath to the Presentation Convent, Cathedral Square, St. John’s, the sum of Five hundred dollars.

5. I give, devise and bequeath to Mount Cashel Orphanage, St. John’s, the sum of Five hundred dollars.

6. I give devise and bequeath to the Roman Catholic Archbishop of st. John’s, the sum of Eight hundred dollars for High Masses for the repose of my soul.

7. I give devise and bequeath to each Priest attached to the Arch diocese of St. John’s at the time of my death the sum of one hundred dollars for masses for the repose of my soul.

8. I give devise and bequeath to St. Vincent De Paul Society the sum of Five hundred dollars.

9. I give devise and bequeath to my nephew, Richard Boggan and his wife, Elizabeth, the house which I now occupy together with all the household effects for the term of their natural lives. After the death of said Richard Boggan and his said wife Elizabeth the said house is to be sold and the proceeds resulting from such sale is to be used for the purpose of a Bursary for the education of young men studying for the Priesthood, the custody of said fund and the manner of awarding same to be in the hands of the Archbishop for the time being of St. John’s.

10. The proceeds from the sale of the house adjoining the one now occupied by me and recently sold are to go towards the said bursary under the same conditions as just mentioned.

11. To my said nephew, Richard Boggan, I devise and bequeath my interest in the land belonging to the estate of the late Captain Doyle, also the cooperage, with the stock in trade, tools, and implements, subject to an annual rental of Twenty dollars to be paid to the Belvedere Orphanage.

12. I give devise and bequeath to my said nephew, Richard Boggan, and his wife, Elizabeth, the sum of Five hundred dollars.

13. I give devise and bequeath to my nephew, James Boggan, and his wife the sum of Four Hundred dollars.

14. I give devise and bequeath to John Boggan the sum of three hundred dollars.

15. I give devise and bequeath to the Orphans Home for the Blind, Jersey city, New York, U. S. A. The sum of Fifty dollars.

16. A three hundred dollar debenture which I hold is to go towards the bursary for the Education of young men for the Priesthood under the same conditions as previously mentioned.

17. Out of Seven thousand dollars held by me in Newfoundland Victory Bonds I make the following bequests, namely,

(a) One thousand dollars to the convent of Mercy, Military Road, St. John’s.

(b) One thousand dollars to the Presentation Convent, Cathedral Square, St. John’s

( c) One thousand dollars to St. Patrick’s Convent Riverhead, St. John’s

(d) five hundred dollars to the Reverend Daniel O’Callaghan

(e) Five hundred dollars to the Reverend Fr. Goff

(f) Three thousand dollars to the Archbishop of the Arch diocese of St. John’s, to be devoted towards the Cathedral repair fund.

All the rest residue and remainder of my estate I give devise and bequeath towards the Bursary for the education of young men for the Priesthood under the same conditions as preciously mentioned.

This is a Codicil to the last Will and Testament of me, James Boggan, of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Cooper, dated the 26th day of May A. D. 1922.

1. I hereby reduce by thirty per cent, the amounts of the bequests numbered, respectively, One, two, three, four, five, six & eight in my said will.

2. I hereby cancel bequest numbered Seven in said will, and substitute the following therefor: “I give, devise and bequeath to each Priest attached at the time of my death to the Parishes of St. John’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Patrick’s and Kilbride, the sum of One hundred dollars for Masses for the repose of my soul”.

Dated at St. John’s this 20th day of November, A. D. 1922.
