This is the last will and testament of me Henry George Chafe of Petty Harbor in the Central District Planter.     I desire that my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses shall be first paid, I give devise and bequeath to my lawful wife Caroline Chafe for the term of her natural life the following property and effects to hold the same for her sole and separate use and benefit namely my dwelling house now occupied by me with the appurtenances also all my landed property wheresoever situate and the rents issues and profit thereof, also my household furniture and effects and also the yearly interest dividend profit and income arising out of all monies Bank stock, funds investments and other effects of which I may die possessed.     Upon the death of my said wife should she survive me or upon my death should I survive my said wife, I desire that my estate and property shall be disposed of and I do hereby devise and bequeath the same as follows.
I devise and bequeath to my son Allen Chafe eight shares in the capital stock of the Union Bank of Newfoundland of twenty five pounds each now standing in my name for his sole and absolute use and benefit.     I also give and bequeath to the said Allen Chafe his heirs and assigns my dwelling house which I at present occupy together with the garden in front of the Church. I further give and bequeath to the said Allen Chafe the farm with all erections thereon together with horse and all farming implements also one half of the fishing room at present in the occupancy of Richard Bulley and one feather bed and bedding.
I give and bequeath to my son Henry George Chafe six shares in the capital stock of the Union Bank of Newfoundland of twenty five pounds each now standing in my name for his sole and absolute use and benefit     I also give and bequeath to the said Henry G. Chafe my half of the dwelling house in St. John’s held conjointly by me and my brother Emanuel Chafe together with my dwelling house gold watch and one feather bed and bedding.
I give and bequeath to my son Jacob Chafe six shares in the capital stock of the Union Bank of Newfoundland of twenty five pounds each now standing in my name for his sole and absolute use and benefit.     I also give and bequeath to the said Jacob Chafe his heirs and assigns the fishing Room at present in the possession of Thomas Chafe and know by the name of Codners Rooms together with all erections thereon and one feather bed and bedding.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Matilda Widicombe two shares in the capital stock of the Union Bank of Newfoundland of twenty five pounds each now standing in my name for her sole and absolute use and benefit.
I give and bequeath to Mary Ann Chafe wife of Daniel two shares in the capital stock of the Union Bank of Newfoundland of twenty five pounds each now standing in my name for her sole and absolute benefit.     I further will that my household furniture be divided equally between my three sons, Allen, Henry G. and Jacob Chafe share and share alike with the exception of the large clock which is to remain where it stands I appoint Jacob Bishop Schoolmaster at Petty Harbor and David Marshall Chafe of the Goulds Farmer executors of this my last will.     Witness my hand at Petty Harbor this twenty first day of June A.D. 1884.     Henry G.
