In re
         Eleanor Gribble deceased

In the name of God Amen.     I Eleanor Gribble of St. John’s in the Island of Newfoundland widow of Joseph Gribble Senr Fish Culler, being of sound mind good disposing memory and good bodily health but mindful that it is appointed for all persons once to die do publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following viz-

Firstly I will and bequeath my soul to Almighty God who gave it and my body to be buried in the Protestant burying ground of St. John’s as near as may be to my husband or son, and order my executor hereafter appointed to bury me in a decent manner fitting for a person in my rank of life and cause my name and my son Joseph Gribble’s name to be engraved on my husband’s headstone.

Secondly, I will and bequeath (after my death) to my loving daughter in law Ann Gribble to my grandson John Gribble to my granddaughters Mary Ann Gribble, Eleanor Gribble and Selina Gribble and grandson Josiah Gribble all and each an equal share of rent in the leasehold property on the south side of Duckworth Street of which Mr. William Branscomb is the lessor and now tenanted by Capt Monckton and Daniel Muleay untill the lease expires.

Thirdly, I will and bequeath (after my death) to my daughter in law Ann Gribble to my grandson John Gribble to my granddaughters Mary Ann Gribble, Eleanor Gribble and Selina Gribble and grandson Josiah Gribble after all my debts are paid, all expenses of my funeral, all expenses of proving this will and all other expenses that may be incurred all and each an equal share in all the money I may have in the Commercial Bank and elsewhere, and I hereby order my executor to pay my daughter in law Ann Gribble her share six months after my death, provided she attends to my wants in sickness and in health, untill my death, and I give her the money for her attendance on me, and if she do not thus attend on me this legacy must not be given her I also order that the remaining money be placed in the Newfoundland Savings Bank in the names of each separately of the above named five grandchildren, and I also order that each shall receive yearly interest, but that the principal shall not be paid untill each arrives at the age of twenty years, and if it should happen that one or more of the children should die before the age of twenty years that child or children’s share shall be divided among the remaining children as before directed.

Fourthly, I will and bequeath to my loving grandson John Gribble his grandfather’s watch and his grandfather’s armchair.

Fifthly, I will and bequeath to my granddaughter Mary Ann Gribble my parents silver sugar tongs marked M.M. and my warming pan.

Sixthly I will and bequeath to my loving granddaughter Eleanor Gribble my six silver spoons, caddy spoon and cream ladle and sugar tongs all marked E.G. my best feather bed and Buarew Bed Frame, and my best bed quilt.

Seventhly, I will and bequeath to my loving granddaughter Selina Gribble my small feather bed and my best looking glass.

Eighthly, I will and bequeath to my beloved grandson Josiah Gribble his grandfather’s writing desk.     Lastly, I will and bequeath to my beloved grandson Josiah Gribble all and every the rest and remainder of my property whatever the same may be not being heretofore disposed of after paying all my just debts, all the above legacies, all my funeral expenses, all the expense of proving this will with the expense of engraving the headstone and all other expenses that may be incurred, And also I do hereby make ordain constitute and appoint my trusty and beloved friend Mr. Thomas Avery of St. John’s Gentleman his heirs executors and assigns my sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all and every my former wills at any time heretofore made.     In witness whereof I have to this my last will and testament set and subscribed my hand and seal at St. John’s aforesaid this twenty third day of July one thousand eight hundred & sixty two.     Eleanor Gribble (LS)     Signed sealed published and declared by the testatrix Eleanor Gribble as her last will testament in the presence of us who at her request in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witness thereto, Patk O’Sullivan, Thos.
