Will of Edward Barbour

IN RE:   EDWARD BARBOUR.    DECEASED

This is the last will and Testament of Edward Barbour of New town in the Island of Newfoundland merchant. I Edward Barbour being of sound disposing mind memory and understanding do hereby will devise and bequeath as follows: -

1. Unto the Methodist Church of Newtown (the expenditure of which I leave to my brother Samuel) the sum of Two hundred dollars

2. Unto my brother Samuel Barbour an interest to the value of Five hundred dollars in my share of the vessel "Seabird" the balance or remaining value of said vessel I leave unto my wife Mary J. and my children Lester, Job, Carl, Clarissa Sybil, Elsie and Wilhelmina share and share alike.

3. Unto my wife and above mentioned children the interest I hold and possess in a Life Insurance Policy No. 1251124 issued by The Mutual Life Insurance Co of New York and also a Gold Bond issued by The Canada Life Assurance Co. No. 079555 E/15. - my wife to receive one third of the value and the balance to be divided among my children share and share alike.

4. To set at rest any doubt that may exist after my death I wish to say that my wife is to have the $2000 of insurance on my life and made payable to her.

5. The moneys deposited in Banks in my name and also the moneys due me under other policies of Life Insurance (after paying the bequest to the Methodist Church) are to be divided as follows: - Unto to my wife the sum of one thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars and the balance between my children - share and share alike.

6. Subject to proviso I leave and bequeath unto my wife and children my share of the double dwelling house now occupied by me together with all the furniture in the same and land adjoining said house - share and share alike - provided however that should my wife remarry and my daughters marry she and they shall then forfeit all claim on house and contents which shall go and belong to my sons - provided further that my wife shall have the control of the house during her widowhood.

7. Unto my three sons Lesster Job and Carl I leave my half fo the mercantile business of E & S. Barbour together with stock in trade goods debts and effects of said business also the buildings including shop stores and stage etc also the schooners vessels and boats together with lines and twines and everything else in connection with said business; also all lands owned by me save that mentioned in paragraph 6 - share and share alike.

8. I give my executor the power to hold all moneys for my children who are minors until they come of age - he may however pay over the money before that time if in his judgment it is wanted for any special purpose I hereby constitute and appoint my brother Samuel Barbour of Newtown as the sole Executor of this my last will and Testament and revoke all former distribution of my property at any time heretofore made and do declare this to be my last will and Testament.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand at Newtown aforesaid this ninth day May in the year one thousand nine hundred and twelve - Edward Barbour - Signed by Edward Barbour the Testator in our presence who at the same time in his presence and in the presence of each other at his request signed our names as witness.
