Will of Daniel Monroe

In re: DANIEL MONROE DECEASED.

This is the last will and testament of me Daniel Monroe, of St. John's, in the Island of Newfoundland, Gentleman.

1. I appoint my nephew David M. Baird and the Eastern Trust Company Executors of this my will.
2. I direct that all my debts funeral and testamentary expenses be paid our of my estate.
3. I give and bequeath to my brother William D. Monroe at present residing at Christchurch New Zealand for and during his lifetime the interest on twenty thousand dollars which said sum shall be invested in Trustee Funds of Newfoundland or Canada or both. On the death of my said brother his widow shall receive the said interest during her lifetime and after the death of his said widow the said principal sum of twenty thousand dollars shall be equally divided amongst the children of my said brother the children of a deceased parent shall receive the parents share.
4. I give and bequeath to Christina Harvey widow of the late Alfred J. Harvey M.D. for and during her lifetime the interest on four thousand ($4000.00) dollars. The said sum shall be invested as in clause three. On the death of the said Christina Harvey the said sum shall be equally divided amongst her children, the children of a deceased parent taking the parents share.
5. I give and bequeath to Mary Baird daughter of the late David Baird one thousand dollars ($1000.00)
6. I give and bequeath to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Poor Fund the sum of Four thousand dollars ($4000.00) to be invested as in clause three and the interest arising therefrom to be paid yearly to the deserving poor of the congregation.
7. I give and bequeath to the Foreign Mission Fund of St. Andrews Church the sum of Two thousand dollars ($2000.00) to be invested as in clause three and the interest arising therefrom to be paid to the fund.
8. I give and bequeath to the Home Mission Fund of St. Andrews Church the sum of Two thousand dollars ($2000.00) to be invested as in clause three and the interest arising therefrom to be paid to the fund.
9. I give and bequeath to the Newfoundland Dorcas Society the sum of One thousand dollars ($1000.00)
To the St. Vincent De Paul Society of St. John's the sum of One thousand dollars ($1000.00)
To the Church of England Orphanage of St. John's the sum of One thousand dollars ($1000.00)
To the Methodist Orphanage the sum of One thousand dollars ($1000.00)
To the Belvidere Orphanage the sum of One thousand dollars ($1000.00)
To the Salvation Army Poor Fund St. John's One thousand dollars ($1000.00)
To the Salvation Army Rescue Home St. John's One thousand dollars ($1000.00)
To the Hospital for Consumptives St. John's Two thousand dollars ($2000.00)
To the Institute for the Blind, Halifax Nova Scotia Two thousand dollars ($2000.00)
To the St. Dunstan's Hospital for blind Soldiers London England Two thousand dollars ($2000.00)
To the aged Ministers Fund of the Presbyterian Church Halifax Nova Scotia Two thousand dollars ($2000.00)
10. I give and bequeath all the rest residue and remainder of my estate and effects in equal shares unto the following ten persons. James Monroe. Sydney Monroe and Olive Monroe the children of my brother Samuel N. Monroe of Armagh Ireland. Frederick C. Alderdice. Norman S. Alderdice of St. John's Newfoundland and Mrs. Dollie Anderson of Ballymena, Ireland the children of my sister Kathleen Alderdice. David M. Baird, John Boyd Baird. Kathleen Baird and Jean Ayre the children of my sister the late Julia Baird. The shares of Frederick C. Alderdice, shall be, invested as in clause three and the interest arising therefrom shall be paid him during his lifetime and on his death his said share shall be equally divided, if his youngest child shall have attained the age of twenty five, amongst his widow and children, the children of a deceased parent taking the parents share. If the said youngest child shall have not attained the age of twenty five then the interest arising from the said share shall be equally divided amongst the said widow and children until such time as the said youngest child shall have attained the age of twenty five then the said share shall be divided as aforesaid. The share of Norman C. Alderdice shall be invested as in clause three and the interest arising therefrom shall be paid him during his lifetime and on his death his said share shall, if his youngest child shall have attained the age of twenty five years be equally divided amongst his children, the children of a deceased parent taking the parents share. Should the said youngest child not have attained the age of twenty five than the interest arising from the said share shall be equally divided amongst the said children until such time as the youngest child shall have attained the age of twenty five when the said share shall be divided as aforesaid. Should any of the said ten persons predecease me leaving children the share of such person shall be equally divided amongst the children of such person. Should any of the said ten die unmarried or die without leaving issue and previous to my death then the share of such person shall be equally divided amongst those of the ten living at my death.

I direct my Executors to pay with as little delay as possible the several bequests in this my said will herein above set forth. In Witness Whereof I the said Daniel Monroe have hereunto set my hand this twenty seventh day of September One thousand nine hundred and Seventeen DANIEL MONROE Signed by the above named testator as his last will and testament, in the presence of us, present at the same time who in his presence and at this request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
