In re CORNELIUS BOWDEN: DECEASED. In the name of God Amen. Dated at St. John’s N.F. this 11th October in the 36th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Queen. And in the year of our Lord 1872. I Cornelius Bowden of the town and Island aforesaid Bootmaker being at present in ill health but of sound mind and memory thank God therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner following that is to say, first and principally of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life. I give demise and bequeath the same in the following manner and form:First I desire and request that all my lawful debts due of me shall be paid as soon as possible after my interment. I then divide the property in the following manner I bequeath £50 sterling to my brother John Bowden or his heirs in Ireland and £20 sterling each to John, Thomas and Catherine Cleare in Ireland and to Simon Breen of St. John’s Bootmaker I give £5 currency after which I give demise and bequeath to my wife Elizabeth Bowden all my houses and landed property and possessions which are to sold for her benefit. And I do appoint Mr. Michael Murray and Mr. Francis Trelegan to be my executors to this my last will and testament. Ratifying this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
